Small Bathroom Organizing

Do you struggle figuring out where to start organizing your small bathroom?
No worries! Here are some great tips to help you get that ball rolling.

As with any organizing project, you're going to need to completely clear the space, including the cabinets and drawers.

Everything goes in the middle of the room on the floor.

Clean out those cabinets & drawers.

Now, sort your products by type. While doing this, toss anything you don't like, won't use, that is expired, or that is broken/unusable.

For everything that's left, here are ways to get it back in and make it work for you:

A tiered tray on your counter. 2 or 3 tiers are perfect for containing clutter that otherwise may get sprawled everywhere.
Store taller items on the top tier.

A small multi-drawer unit for storing pain, cold, and allergy medicines that are regularly used. You don't have to keep it on the counter, this works under the sink or on a shelf as well. You can use labels, stickers, or a marker to label it, or not label it all. It's up to you.

Clear containers are best for items such as cotton swabs, cotton balls, hair ties, makeup brushes, and many other small and/or awkward items. They are available at the dollar store, or you could even recycle your wide candle jars. Just set them in a shallow pan of boiling water or on a warmer, dump out the wax, and clean them out. Then you can label them with a paint pen, label maker, vinyl, or not at all.

These containers and jars work fabulously on the tiered tray or even on a wall shelf. Either way, think vertical to use as much available space as possible without making the room look more cluttered.

Measure your drawers & use some shelf liner & clear organizing bins inside to maximize your space and its functionality. This works great for small items, toothpaste/toothbrushes, floss, combs & brushes, etc. No more rolling around & getting lost in the back of the drawer for a year!

There are plenty of ways to get your under-sink area under control.

Lazy susans are great little inventions. They come in different forms; some have tall sides or no sides, there are tiered and single, with and without inserts. They're useful not only under the sink, but on the counter or even in the bathroom closet.

Tiered sliding basket organizers are awesome for organizing products in bottles and packages such as hair care, contact solution, face creams, and others. Some come with just baskets & some come with a flat shelf on top. You can usually find them on Amazon and at places like The Container Store or Bed Bath & Beyond.

Over the cabinet baskets work well for hot tools as well as smaller objects. Command hooks are great for this also.

Whether you store your cleaning products under your sink or in the bathroom closet, a well-placed tension or towel rod works for hanging spray bottles. You can also attach hair tools, hot tools, dusters, and scrubbing items to hooks & hang them there.

Place a wire basket on your toilet tank to store extra bars of soap, washcloths, extra rolls of toilet paper, or whatever you want. The key to making it look nice is to color-coordinate whatever you put in there.

Wall baskets are very functional as well as good for giving the room and the wall dimension. You can store things in them, and if they're wire, you can hang hooks from the bottom for other things.

Baskets for towel storage work especially well in small bathrooms when mounted to the wall. Some bathrooms don't have linen closets or room for a rack to store towels. This is where we think vertical and make the most of our wall space!

If you have the floor space, but not the cabinet space, and don't want a clunky rack or don't need to store too many towels, a nice, large wicker basket on the floor with the towels neatly rolled inside doubles as decoration and nice storage.

A rolling cart works well for storing toiletries, makeup, and hair supplies. I have one in my closet which just happens to be in my bathroom. The top and middle are full of makeup, and the bottom is hair tools and hair care products. I hang my shower combs on the rim, and at one time attached heavy duty hooks to the side to hold my blow dryer and other items.

I don't have a lot of extra counter or cabinet space, so when I do my makeup or hair I just roll it out, then when I'm done I tuck it back in.

Remember, this project doesn't have to be pretty or perfect. It needs to be practical and functional. It has to suit YOUR needs. Give some thought to how you typically use your bathroom, what you love about it, and what drives you crazy, then go from there. Rinse and repeat until you're happy!
